InsideOUT Writers’ teachers include a team of dedicated, talented and highly respected professional writers, including Pulitzer Prize and award-winning screenwriters, poets, journalists and educators. Notably, Los Angeles Times staff writer Duane Noriyuki and Pulitzer Prize nominee Mark Salzman are two of our original teachers.

Our teachers are at the core of all we achieve. They inspire, coach and guide students to release grudges and refocus their lives by putting their thoughts on paper.

In order to become a teacher, volunteers must participate in an initial orientation and be fingerprinted as part of the Probation Department’s background requirements. Quarterly refresher training is also required of all volunteers.

InsideOUT Writers classes take place once or twice a week at Central Juvenile Hall, Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall and Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall. Teachers lead one to two hour classes with up to 12 participants.
