The mission of InsideOUT Writers is to reduce the juvenile recidivism rate by providing a range of services that evolves to meet the needs of currently and formerly incarcerated youth and young adults.
Using creative writing as a catalyst for personal transformation, these young people are empowered with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully re-integrate into our communities, becoming advocates for their future.
WHAT WE DO
We provide creative writing classes inside juvenile detention facilities, re-entry and case management services, counseling, Writing Circles for those released, community engagements, cultural events, and fields trips. Click here to learn how we serve those impacted by the justice system.
The national recidivism rate is 75% but for those who participate in our Alumni Program, less than 10% return to incarceration.
It costs $233,600 per year to incarcerate a youth, while we serve our youth at just $2,272 per year.
In the course of IOW's 25 year history, we have provided over 25,000 youth with trauma-informed arts-based creative writing classes inside the world's largest juvenile detention system. Once released, our students are encouraged to continue their writing journey through our Writing Circles within the Alumni Program.
Our drastically reduced recidivism rate proves that proper resources and a non-judgmental community of support can, and does, cause lasting change.
