WRITING ON THE

INSIDE AND THE OUT

Since 1996, we have provided over 25,000 youth with healing-informed creative writing for personal transformation in the world's largest juvenile detention system. IOW's long-term goal is to reduce recidivism among juvenile offenders by providing youth and young adults with tools for pro-social means of self-expression, self-reflection, and positive inter-group communication. We manage over 40 creative writing teachers and their 90-minute classes in collaboration with the Los Angeles Probation Department and partnership with Arts for Incarcerated Youth Network (AIYN). Once released, our students are deemed "Alumni" and are encouraged to continue their writing journey through our weekly Writing Circles provided through our Alumni Program.
